Well Connected

Back when I studied Interior Design, space planning was a key area of the curriculum. Of particular importance was circulation, how you move around a space, and how one space linked to another. "No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent ", as the poet John Donne famously wrote. Likewise, rooms are not isolated spaces, physically and decoratively, but part of a larger whole, be it a house or a hospital.

As a photographer, I always try to visually link one space to another, so that the viewer can get a sense of the whole. A shot through a doorway or across a stairwell helps to orientate and rationalise a space. The architects of this house clearly thought long and hard about this, resulting in a clear and ordered layout, with grand vistas, but also with unexpected glimpses.
